Okay, I will admit I do like a good gift shop. Is Salem littered with floppy witch hats and generic tourism souvenir t-shirts? Yes. Are there other stores and business worth supporting that offer artist-created goods that support the local community? Absolutely.
For more information, the ☕ emoji you'll see next to listings will signal there's tea on the business, which I recommend you read.
Moons Card and Gift shop- Decent souvenir shop, local run.
Moody's home and Gifts- Fun shop with local artist sourced items, good spot for souvenir gifts.
Georgia's Little Salem Shop- It's fucking cute, okay. This girl had more hustle at 7 then half of us do as adults. Go buy something and contribute to her college fund.
Die With your Boots On- Local independently owned clothing company, they have amazing stuff. Size inclusive!
The Ossuary- DWYBO sister store, Victorian goth boutique.
Emporium 32- Vintage and steam punky, and supports local artists. Absolute must, you’ll never see another store like it. Get a Zoltar reading!
Harrisons Comics- Really big selection if you’re into comics. ☕There's a old reddit thread detailing how a probationary staff member had an inappropriate interaction. It was addressed by the owners in the thread, as well as supporters. Reddit Thread. support at your own discretion.
Silver Moon Comics- More curated, nice owners.
Joliet Tea Company- Great spot for loose leaf tea, and they have a new sit down arrangement.
The Trolly depot- Great gift shop, and they always have interesting décor for sale, with items from local artists.
The Village Silversmith- Amazing gem and jewelry, absolute must go.
Vamp Fangs- Vamp goth, great jewelry
Wicked good books- Support the independent book store! Great selection!
Witch City Wicks- Local candle company, absolute must go!
Witch way gifts- One of the best souvenir shops in the city, a bit out of the way, but if I'm going to send you to one, this is it.
Witch Tees- Token tourist shirt shop.
Wynotts- fun ollivanders-esq shop. The shopkeeper is a fantastic lady and the dedication to the theme is cool.
Ye Olde Pepper Company- Oldest candy shop in the US, most made in house. Absolute must go!
Blackcraft- goth, insanely cool location with great salem merch, an amazing attached coffee house, and they used to have a haunt that operates during October, and you can tour it sans actors in the off season. ☕This one hurts. They had an amazing haunt on the second floor, and subletted the space to fucking Matt Rife and the Warrens Exhibit. The locals tried to fight it, and lost. I don't need to post links on this one, the internet isn't short on content for how trashy Rife is.
Hive and forge- Amazing oddities/soaps/herbal stuff, art and jewelry, all handmade. You never know what you’ll find, and I make it a point to go every time I'm in the city!
Nocturne- Goth, amazing selection of jewelry and accessories. we go every time.
Black veil Shoppe- spooky and amazing. The décor is a great horror spiked cottagecore, and the staff are amazing!
Coven- Women’s Boutique. Goth clothing, makeup, bags and jewelry. Great staff!
Oak+Moss- plants! A tad on the expensive side, but a great spot to stop if you have a green thumb!
Diehl Marcus & Co.- Amazing tea selection, candles, and body care items. Awesome staff to boot. Great finds at the counter as well! My partner, who thinks tea is dirt water, even walked out with a few blends to try.
Witchy Shopping:
**Cracks Knuckles**
Okay, I will admit to a bit of bias here, but it's something I care a lot about. As someone recovering from religious trauma who took a long time to come around on their beliefs, I will say this: Whether you're a Pagan or not, go in. You're in the Witch City, so take a look around and Be Curious, Not Judgmental. (Walt Whitman, but mostly Ted Lasso) These are great places for assorted stuff, even if you’re not into it. Most carry a lot of other things besides their usual witchcraft fare, so they’re worth a walk through.
Crow Haven Corner- oldest witchcraft shop in America. A bit hard to walk through if you’re tall as the ceiling is filled with glass decor, but cool stuff nonetheless. Lorelei is a G of a woman, and if you need the help, she's famous for her love spells.
The Plant Witch of Salem- Great plants and merino moss spell jars, new and amazing!
Coven’s Cottage- amazing decor and a lot of uncommon finds, and family run. Norse themed, amazing dried flower and herbal arrangements. My absolute favorite spot in the city, I would live here if they let me. (I still miss Simon)☕I hesitate posting this for a few reasons, but I said I'd be honest. back in 2018, an article was released on vice about racism in paganism, and Coven's Cottage was mentioned by name by an ex employee in the article. That reeks of a disgruntled ex-employee, so take it with a grain of salt. There's also a reddit thread that echoes the sentiment. Personally, I've been going to this shop for over a decade, I have never once had a bad interaction or found anything inappropriate. The family are wonderful people who work hard to keep up a beautiful business. Which I will continue to support.
Enchanted- Laurie Cabots Shop. Great all around shop with a good selection of wares and jewelry and supplies.
Pentagram- my close-second favorite in the city. Great selection, high quality incense, a well-informed and curated book selection and run by great people. Get a reading here!
The Cauldron Black- Great staff and a decent all around selection. I always end up buying something here.
Artemisia Botanicals- Food grade herbs and spices, as well as classes and workshops. If I'm ingesting anything in use in a craft practice, I get it from here.
Hauswitch- Candles, spell kits and aura photography. ☕This one was also a bummer. The owner is well known locally for mistreating their vendors. Instagram Post from ex-candle vendor . Support at your own discretion.
Hex- biggest location, tourist oriented. ☕You can't throw a rock down Essex street, or mutter the word "Warlock" without hearing something about Christian Day. There's honestly so many links, just start with this one. I personally avoid going in there if at all possible.
